Frequently Asked Questions
My key does not insert into the lock smoothly and/or it does not turn very easily, what can I do?
Your lock likely may have something obstructing it, or is having some sort of lubrication problem internally. This can be easily fixed by spraying light penetrating oil (such as WD-40) into the bolt mechanism, as well as the keyhole. It is ok to spray a large amount into the lock, but be sure to be ready to clean it up with a paper towel. Move the bolt of the lock in and out a number of times in order to let the oil get inside of the lock. If this does not work, please call us and we can assist you with a service call.
What is the difference between re-keying a lock and master keying a lock?
A lock that has been re-keyed means that the tumblers inside of the lock have been adjusted and only new keys will be able to open it. A master key is a key that will operate a number of locks, such as different entrances to a home or a business. We provide both of these services, please call for a free estimate!
I just had a copy of my key made and now it does not work - what should I do?
Depending on where you had the copy made, this is a common problem. Many "big box" stores and retailers utilize equipment that is not properly serviced and calibrated. Machines that are not properly set are less likely to make as close of a copy of the key given to them than machines that are set. Most locksmiths calibrate their machines monthly, whereas the untrained clerk may be using machines that are hardly - if ever - calibrated. If you continue to experience frustration, call JD Lock & Key, we should be able to help!
Why should I use more expensive locksmith security locks than what is on the store shelf?
Depending on your security needs, you may be purchasing residential locks for a business, and vice versa. Many stores sell low cost, high profit products that are not ideal for everyone and in fact are easily broken, security wise. Only licensed locksmiths have the highest quality goods that will provide you with the most safety - remember, this is the security for your home or business. Taking a less expensive route on security may end up costing you more than you imagine in the long run.
